The Snare of Compare

Happy Wednesday, my friends! I hope you all are having a great week so far. Below is a talk from Carolyn Mahaney from this years Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference. Thanks to the ladies over at Girltalk for sharing it. It is based on John 21:15-23. This spoke to me in deep ways, and is definitely what the Lord wanted me to hear right now.

It is so easy to get caught up in wanting what others have, and be bitter about circumstances that we cannot change. I know I have been guilty of this as I am sure we all have. Some examples are: wondering why some people are married when we are not, why some people have children and others can’t, why some people have it easier financially, and why some people are blessed with good health while others suffer, etc. In John 21, Jesus told Peter that he would die a martyr’s death and to follow Him. After this, Peter looked back at the disciple whom Jesus loved and asked, “Lord what about Him?” Jesus then responded, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” Peter was guilty of comparing what was going to happen to him to another’s circumstance, but Jesus quickly told him that was not any of his concern.

This passage was a good reminder for me to not worry about things that I cannot change, and not be envious of what others have that I do not. Our main focus should be to follow Jesus and live the best way we can with the life that He has given us.  Carolyn discusses this further in her talk, and I hope that you take some time out of your week to watch this. I think you will be greatly encouraged.

So You STILL Think God is a Merciful God?!

Happy Wednesday, friends. I hope you all are having a good week thus far. This week I have had a heavy heart for the victims of the theater shooting in Colorado. I cannot imagine what these people and their families are going through right now, and it is hard for me to understand how someone could do something so evil.

On Sunday, I read a blog post from a mom who was in the Aurora theater during the shooting. This woman has an amazing faith, and in her post describes how God is still a merciful and good God in the midst of this tragedy.  She also gives ways you can be praying for her family during this time. I would encourage you all to take a little time today to read what she has to say, and then to pray for her and the others that are involved.  You can read her post here.
